IRR’s River Rascals returned to the water in July 2013 for a fifth year of fun and learning! Thanks to all who help bring this model program to Des Moines Metro Area youth.
River Rascals gives urban kids the chance to experience the wonders of rivers and their surrounding natural environment with caring adult volunteers and mentors. River Rascals get instruction on paddling, fishing, water safety, river etiquette, river biology and water quality monitoring.
It takes a lot of friends each year to deliver this program! IRR partners with Children and Family Urban Ministries, the Iowa DNR and many dedicated volunteers. Special thanks to River Rascals Leader and IRR board member Robin Fortney, CFUM Program Coordinator Jackie Myers, DNR River Programs’ John Wenck and IOWATER staff, IRR board member Mary Skopec, supporter Sue Caley, and Central Iowa Paddlers. Thanks, also, to River Rascals’ 2013 business partners Bass Pro Shops, Klean Kanteen, Hy-Vee and In The Bag for help with supplies and meals, plus outfitter assistance from Polk and Johnson County Conservation Boards.
